TEXAS 14th MAY 2008
Today we managed to intercept two tornado warned storms. We headed west from Weatherford towards Abilene and there the first tornado watch of the day was issued.
Near the town of EDEN whilst viewing the storm we were completely caught off guard by a lightning bolt that hit about 20 feet from our position that I was lucky enough to capture on video (see image S142008 below and the lightning link on the home page), That was followed by about 30 minutes of the most intense lightning activity that any of us had ever witnessed.
We blasted towards the town of BRADY where we intercepted the hook of the first storm as it passed through town. We intercepted
the second storm as it passed over the town of MARBLE FALLS, where we again found ourselves again in the extreme edge of the hook. We found a great vantage point at the top of a hill to see the storm pass through town before we were battered by the extreme hurricane like wind and rain that grazed our position.
We eventually headed for AUSTIN for the night, but later that evening another strong storm with intense lightning rolled through.
Doppler radar indicated that the storm contained 3 inch hail but the core passed half a mile to our south.
